Monthly Archives: February 2004

Quick note to you all.

If you’ve ever wanted to install PHP4, Apache 2, and MySQL on a Windows Server-based box, I have a word of advice for you:
Don’t.
It is the largest pain in the neck I think I have ever tried to work through as a computer admin.

Quick news of note

The first Michigan Wolverine has been spotted in my birth state in around 200 years. Pretty big deal.

Wireless internet = teh funny

Well, this has at least been an interesting night in Markel computer-land. I’ll try to make a (somewhat) long story short.
Amanda and I chose recently to give up our in-home broadband to try and save ourselves a decent amount of money - something that was no small decision in our home, since we both [...]

Transfiguration of Our Lord, 2004

My sermon for Transfiguration 2004, series C - “Beauty, in the Dark,” follows in this extended entry.

Go us.

We have, as of today, begun paying back the principle balance of our student loans, rather than paying back interest.
$11,000 more to go.

You know what it is….

I think Steve Jobs’ Reality Distortion Field has increased in range somehow and is affecting me all the way out in Green Bay.

Oh, yeah - almost forgot.

I got me a copy of DDRMAX2 from my best friend for Christmas - and I like it. Nice selection of songs, the dancers are back, and the videos they have playing are much better than on MAX1.
But I’ve totally AA’d way more songs than I ever have with MAX1, and that’s just on [...]

It is a sickness. A sickness and a disease. And I am succumbing to it.

My first true home computer was a Laser 128, which was an Apple // clone - and I loved it. We had quality programs for it, like Bank Street Writer (complete with little click-noises when you typed to satiate typewriter-converts), a mess of MECC educational programs, and even a few games, like Ultima IV [...]

Tae Kwan Leap?

You too will face the 1000 styles of Rumsfeld!

Lunch.

Markel likes spicy chicken!

Tue’s Day?

Miles Standish is made leader of the Plymouth Colony on this day in 1621. In 1753, calendars in Sweden jump from February 17 to March 1 as the country adopts the Gregorian Calendar, likely upsetting anyone with a birthday in the second half of February (no presents for you!). Newsweek was first published [...]

Almost forgot.

One added news item of weird interest: a group at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island is trying to raise awareness of racism by offering a scholarship only available to whites.
I don’t know how many times I’ve joked about this, but someone went and actually did it - I’m thrilled and amused at the same [...]

monday, Monday, MONDAY

A-Rod is headed to the Yankees, according to every sports news source on the planet Earth.
Welcome to February 16; on this day - Fidel Castro became Premier of Cuba in 1959. The first 911 service was established in Haleyville, Alabama in 1968. The first computer BBS was created in Chicago in 1978. [...]

Just so you have an idea…

If you ever want an afternoon of very interesting, and yet very sad and humorous reading, please hit the Wiki and start following chains of comic book characters.
That is all.

Yes, I still exist.

I’m busy as you can ever imagine, and I had company last week (which I’ll mention soon), but I wanted to remind people who drop by that I am still here.
I will be happy when Lent has ended, however.

Because every Jackson needs something stupid once in a while.

The FCC is investigating the Super Bowl stupidity (which I, of course, think was completely sanctioned by CBS/Viacom), and debating whether or not to fine CBS to ridiculous levels because of violation of indecency clauses.
There’s a lot of plausible deniability being thrown around on this one, but I think the NFL needs to do one [...]

Mike Rowe = teh m0r0n.

This is getting beyond ridiculous - it’s very clear that this clown is just in it for the money (and always has been), and Microsoft should have litigated him into the ground. His letter from MS (cease/desist) was up for auction at Ebay, and was up to $250,000 - which is great, i mean, [...]

Pudge? Tigers? Wha?

Yes, it’s true. The Detroit Tigers have signed Ivan Rodriguez to the tune of $40 million.
Is this a good move for the Tigers, who ended up 43-119 last year? The same Tigers who haven’t had a legit major-leaguer on their roster in (arguably) 10 years? I think so - even though Rodriguez [...]

I bring you news - you read!

I don’t think anyone’s in doubt over Bush dropping Cheney from the ‘04 ticket, but will Giuliani be the replacement? I sure hope so.
