Pay attention to point number 3, then make a guess as to where your favorite companies are in the continuum. I'll bet you wish they were at step 3, but many of them might even still be at step 1. The final paragraph, indicating the desperation of moving to these techniques, is a spot-on prediction.

A fairly detailed post on the changes that are coming along with WordPress 2.7, which is being released to the hosted version of WordPress this week and will hopefully see self-hosted release either before or not long after. I've been using it for a couple of months and it's amazing.
