Meeting the MacGyver of cooking.

So last night, Ken and I decided that we were going to hit up a book signing by who is probably our own personal culinary hero between the two of us: Alton Brown.
Actually, I can’t claim that as much as Ken can, since when I first got my DirecTV set up and was throwing down [...]

Only a few more assignments to go.

I’ll be getting to that Slashdot post soon, as I only have a few more major assignments left to go before I’m done for the quarter.
But Halo 2 comes out tonight, so you never know…

Protected: Election 2004: How does Slashdot culture respond?

There is no excerpt because this is a protected post.

I have a new toy. It is very nice and very Apple.

Sitting in my pocket right this very moment is a little tiny box of joy that has made me very happy and brings delight and glee to my world every time I think of its existence.
If that makes me a sad man, then so be it. I am pathetic.
It is the size of my [...]

Took it back.

Had some audio dropout issues with the Samsung SIR-T351, which are actually, as I found later, somewhat well documented and have been for some time.
They didn’t have another, so I just got my money back and will continue to look for other opportunities.
Amanda and I are going to go out today and take a look [...]

Might be a change of plans.

I might be taking back the Samsung HD received in the near future - I have been reading some rather unflattering things about it and would like to look into another model made by LG.
It’s a combo DVD player and HD receiver, which is an interesting idea. It also has a pass-through for NTSC [...]

How HDTV works in Saint Louis. It’s a little weird.

So we get excellent HD reception here, for the most part.
How HD works - and I wasn’t entirely clear on this in the first part - is that there’s a tremendous amount of bandwidth they are able to send you with the main television signal. A lot of digital television programming runs on what [...]

Phase one is complete.

Also with bonus Olympic coverage commentary!
I’ll fill in a lot of this entry with more information in the near future - most of that will be filling links that I’d like to have so people can see what I’m talking about, and maybe get some photographs or six in to demonstrate, but that’s another story. [...]

Just for you, Ken.

Spaceballs was on this morning on TBS when we first turned on the TV.
Quality.

Amanda’s hospital room.

Words cannot express to you what this hospital room is like.
First of all, there are only private rooms here at Aurora Bay Care. There’s no such thing as a roommate, which is comforting to her. We’ve been very comfortable, and haven’t really had all that many complaints. Amanda is, of course, uncomfortable, [...]

Well, I wasn’t number 100 million.

I did pick up a whole bunch of songs I haven’t heard in a while, though.
I should move my music library to my desktop and serve it up from there.

I am the proverbial snowball.

Well, I’m staying up late, dealing with my crappy at-home modem connection, simply because I’m tracking the iTunes Music Store numbers, and attempting to get a shot at being the person who downloads song number 100,000,000.
I know that my chances aren’t all that hot (well, they’re not much less than anyone else, that’s for sure), [...]

Apple product updates.

Well, it never fails - ask anyone, and they’ll tell you that Apple product cycle updates are always scheduled for the month after you buy one.
PowerBook G4 and iMac updates are rumored to be announced next week, after Apple announced a new set of eMacs today. Power Mac updates are also expected in the [...]

Mac users are a great lot.

I have been playing a lot of iConquer lately, and it only has a seven-day trial period, with some added bonuses for registering your copy and getting it fired up for network play.
iConquer is pretty much a Risk clone, with the ability to take plug-ins of extra maps and such, and, of course, network support [...]

Well, ecto doesn’t work right.

I was hoping that I’d be able to use ecto to edit my blog, but one of the things I’ve grown to be used to with WordPress (even though templating is much easier and it has several options I really like - including not using static pages) is that it doesn’t work well with a [...]

Note for myself for the future.

To copy a DVD that I’ve made in iDVD after I’ve already deleted the source material and DVD project files:nn

Insert the master DVD.
Fire up Disk Utility.
Select the DVD in the Source menu.
Click the New Image button in the Toolbar.
In the dialogue sheet that follows, name the disc, select “CD/DVD Master” from the type list, and [...]

It is here.

As I live and breathe, I am typing this entry on my brand spankin’ new PowerBook 17.
It’s so beautiful…
*cry*
*sniff*
And I’m quickly liking Mac OS X - just like I figured I would - especially since I downloaded 10.3.3, which made my book start up in about 20% of the time is took yesterday. And [...]

It has begun.

I made my first PowerBook-related purchases today, as part of the deposit I sent from my last paycheck finally made its way into my bank account.
The first purchase was for something I know I will be using in the next six months, and that is Keynote. I plan on using presentations for just about [...]

The timing of this sucks.

Well, now I have a decision to make. Based on available reports, the consumer line of desktop Macs has been end-of-life’d at Apple, which means that product revisions are coming down the pipeline. I’ve been debating the PowerBook purchase for a bit now, because rumors have been spreading of updates to the line [...]

They are TAUNTING me.

Just received my Missouri refund by direct deposit, but still no federal refund. Uncle Sam is now officially taunting me.
On the other hand, I am going to be purchasing a backpack into which I may safely place my laptop for reasons of transport and safety for such an expensive investment. I’ve settled on [...]

Well, now…

The only problem right now is that I have to wait so darn long to get my federal tax refund. I don’t remember how long it took last year, but I did e-file this year again, and it hopefully won’t take as long as the worst-case estimate.
This wouldn’t be so bad if I could [...]

A little celebration is in order.

Yes, it is true.
I will be buying a PowerBook 17 as soon as my tax credit comes in by direct deposit (I only wish it didn’t take as long as it does).
And thanks to the ADC and the fact that I am a full-time student, I will be paying 20% under MSRP, which actually makes [...]

The increasing effect of the RDF

You know, the more I look at it, the more I find Mac OS X to be what I believe is the most viable platform in the entire universe - and not simply from an end-user standpoint. I’ve been reading up a lot on OS X Server, and I have to say that I’m [...]

Quick note to you all.

If you’ve ever wanted to install PHP4, Apache 2, and MySQL on a Windows Server-based box, I have a word of advice for you:
Don’t.
It is the largest pain in the neck I think I have ever tried to work through as a computer admin.
