I have a new toy. It is very nice and very Apple.

Sitting in my pocket right this very moment is a little tiny box of joy that has made me very happy and brings delight and glee to my world every time I think of its existence.

If that makes me a sad man, then so be it. I am pathetic.

It is the size of my fist, has a print server, a WAN port, an audio out, and serves as either an 802.11g router or a bridge to an existing wireless network. And it’s Apple hardware, which means it’s dead sexy looking and functionalist while maintaining a certain aesthetic air.

It is an Airport Express.

Now, I haven’t had a real chance to work with it yet, and I’m not sure of what all it is capable, but I had it running without an Internet connection in the apartment the other day, and it was very nice. It networked my Windows PC and my PowerBook (and my Xbox) wirelessly with very little effort. The network did fall apart overnight, but that might be because there’s some interference in my general area, or because it’s not actually using a broadband connection - there’s nothing to route.

Anyway, it’s pretty neat. I think you should buy one. It’s like joy in a box.

Now if I can move on to that iPod….
