“First, I can‚Äôt believe that they would make any serious amount of money on it. Think of the costs associated with putting down the whole thing, brick by brick, not to mention tearing up old bricks when the need to be replaced or are supplanted by customized bricks, and the costs of landscaping the whole thing, and I think you‚Äôre going to find that it will be not a huge source of income for my dear, old alma mater.”

The maintainence is a valid point, but I totally disagree on the rest. This new brick walkway has been part of the university’s long term plan since before I had I job that let me find out that sort of information. They’ve got to lay down all the bricks (one-by-one, even!) anyway, and they’ve got to landscape it anyway, too. The only additional expense is the cost to custom engrave each one, but they’re charging $50 PER BRICK. I don’t think the engraving costs that much. They’ll turn a decent profit with minimal additional effort on something that was going to be done either way. This is the ideal fundraiser.

The tennis courts are a really bad idea. They’ve got 4 or 5 already, and they’re not used enough to justify any more. However, we don’t even know for sure that that will happen – it could be something the planners threw in as a ‘what-if’ idea or just an idea that was being kicked around. I do know that the proposed concert hall that Doc Fischer has been pushing for would have displaced the old tennis courts, so maybe this drawing on the website came from the same plans that the concert hall did. Makes sense to me.
